Ames, IA Lawn Aeration

when should you aerate your lawnLawn aeration is one of the best tools to help develop and maintain a healthy lawn (See diagrams below). The best type of lawn aeration is core aeration. Core aeration is done using an aeration machine (pictured right) that pulls plugs 2-3 inches deep out of your lawn.

Core aeration should be done 1 to 2 times a year, preferably in the spring and fall when the grass/root system is actively growing and aeration will encourage deep root growth. Some other benefits of lawn aeration are:

-Allowing oxygen to get to the roots and soil, allowing them to "breathe"

- Reducing soil compaction

-Controlling thatch build up and enhancing thatch break down

-Allowing water, fertilizers and nutrients direct access to the root system

-Improving drought tolerance

SOIL COMPACTION - Turf grass in compacted soil (above left) grows slowly, lacks vigor and becomes thin or does not grow at all. Core aeration (above center) removes small cores of soil, depositing them on the surface of the turf. This improves the depth and extent of turf grass rooting (above right), and it can help save money on your water bill. (Courtesy of Textron turf care products

ROOT GROWTH - Core aeration allows air, water and fertilizer to better reach the root zone. This stimulates root growth to create healthier, stronger turf grass plants. (Courtesy of Textron turf care products)
