Fertilization is a key component in a healthy lawn. Benefits of fertilization are: Supplying needed nutrients to the lawn, lawn recovery from drought and stress, combats weeds by keeping the grass thick which smothers out weeds.
The 3 main components of fertilizer are Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K).While Nitrogen & Potassium are essential in keeping a healthy green lawn, Phosphorus in not as important for most Ames lawns. Potassium is essential to your lawn especially when your are seeding. It is an important nutrient for new grass seed aiding in root development. PSA uses only Phosphorus Free fertilizers to protect Ames streams, rivers & ponds.
Weeds are controlled two ways. 1) by applying a pre-emergent herbicide in early spring. Pre-emergent herbicides are applied before seed germinates and form a barrier on the soil. This kills most emerging weeds. Aeration, landscaping, raking, etc. can accelerate the break down of this barrier and should be done before you apply the pre-emergent. 2) by applying post-emergent herbicides. Post-emergent herbicides are applied throughout the year depending on which program is developed for you lawn. Post-emergent herbicides are applied directly to actively growing weeds. Fall is the most effective time to control weeds because it is in the fall when plants are storing more carbohydrates. This is especially true for hard to control weeds like creeping charlie, wild violets, etc.
